Performs a variety of semi-skilled and technical tasks in the maintenance and operation of grounds, parks, open spaces, and recreational facilities.

  • Repairs all small engine tools for the Parks and Grounds Division to include but not limited to push mowers, weedeaters, riding mowers, chainsaws, and portable welders.  Performs minor repairs and maintains heavy equipment such as tractors, backhoes, and dump trucks by replacing hoses, filters, plugs, and tires.
  • Fabricates parts to effect repairs and constructs metal appurtenances as needed.
  • Purchases and keeps inventory control on such things as bolts, washer, mower blades, grease and oil.
  • Installs playground equipment and other associated items such as benches, drinking fountains, basketball goals, fibar, filter cloth and curbs. Installs and replaces chainlink, pipe fence and barbed wire as needed in City parks.
  • Assists in landscaping tasks including but not limited to: laying sod, planting and pruning trees.
  • Operates a backhoe, tractor, welder and cutting torch, heavy dump trucks in the building and maintenance of sprinkler systems, water lines, play equipment, backstops, pavilions, soccer goals, removing trees, and jogging trails.  Additionally, uses a variety of construction tools such as drills, sanders, paint guns, and power saws.
  • Maintains records as needed and reports to park maintenance supervisor regarding repairs that need to be done that are beyond the scope of his duties.
  • Assists in training subordinate employees, and other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Graduation from High School or GED equivalent and three years experience in ground maintenance work or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Skill in the operation of the following tools and equipment:  pickup truck, lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mower, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, sprinklers, irrigation systems, two way radio, and miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in ground maintenance, working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions; knowledge of proper tree pruning and maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to operate independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedules; ability to lift heavy objects; walk and stand for long periods of time; ability to perform strenuous physical labor; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Knowledge of the tools and materials in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Knowledge of the tools, and occupational safety hazards, and in house training of the trade.
  • Knowledge and skills in plumbing for water and sewer lines including drinking fountains, valves, sinks, toilets, and other related work.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper techniques of ground maintenance functions and in house training.
  • Five (5) years experience in the use of welders, cutting torches and the ability to fabricate materials needed to complete assigned projects.
  • Possession of a valid  driver’s license and a  Class “A” CDL or pass the written test within 30 days of date of hire and successfully complete the driving test prior to 6 months from date of hire
